The Joy of SpamBots

If the people running the spambots that infest this site daily knew how much fun I had reading their attempts at “posting” things, they would probably be pissed. One bot, from some viagra site in Russia, keeps calling me “Fiona.” I do so love nonsense, there are few things that make more sense in this world, methinks. Ok, on with the CDs!

199) Pete Shelley: Homosapien

Love the cover, looks like an Apple II next to Pete? Not quite as consistently great as the Buzzcocks, but some great futurist bubble gum here, and since it was made in 1981, the futurist part is now retro. Child is father to the man…

200) Curtis Mayfield’s: Chicago Soul

No, not a Curtis Mayfield CD, but instead a collection of songs Curtis wrote and/or produced for other artists on the Okeh label. So, predictabley enough, there are some great songs on here, and some fluffy junk, too–but I’d rather listen to Curtis’s fluffy junk than most songwriters. Dylan, for example: his throwaways give me gas.

201) Carey Bell and Tough Luck: Mellow Down Easy

Undistinguished blues CD by a pretty good harp player… nothing anyone hasn’t heard before, run through the middle-class blues sanitizer, guilt-free for your convenience.

202) Lyle Lovett: Pontiac

This may be my favorite Lovett CD; at the very least, it has 2 of my favorite songs of his: “If I Had A Boat,” and “Walk Through The Bottomland.” And his head looks in good shape ’round this period:

203) The Moldy Peaches: The Moldy Peaches.

Steak for chicken, compadre. A funny band that will win me a trivia contest some day…

204) Stiff Little Fingers: Flags and Emblems

Oh, they’ve slugged on for ever, Jake Burns and crew… well, Jake, and a varying crew. I like the early stuff better (Nobody’s Heroes!), this CD is a little too paint-by-numbers for me, but is does have 2 or 3 excellent pop punk anthems, and the lyrics are, as usual, good and occasionally excellent (Jake does the political song extremely well. Other subjects, hit or miss…)
